The thought that your snoring may be interfering with your relationship isn’t meant to be an insulting one, however, if you do share your bed with someone and you’re a heavy snorer, this habit may actually be damaging to your relationship whether you realize it or not.

A recent study reported on by MSNBC quoted Dr. Laura Berman, a relationship counselor, as stating that snoring actually can and does divide a relationship.

The problem of a lack of sleep for the silent partner may be obvious. Not getting enough sleep on a daily basis can make one irritable, grouchy, moody, angry, sullen, and downright unpleasant to be around. Not to mention the fact that it’s all too easy to blame your poor mood and feelings on your snoring partner! Resentment and anger can easily build if the problem goes untreated.

However, there is another problem with snoring and relationships that many couples don’t even realize. The study on MSNBC brought out that the time a couple spends in bed together can be crucial, not just in terms of a sexual relationship. For many, this is the only time they have together all day without the interruption of kids, phones, television, work, and so on. They are more relaxed and really able to talk to one another and build emotional intimacy. Couples who even have separate bedrooms as a solution to the snoring issue have reported missing this time together, and that the lack of it has caused a rift in their relationship.

It’s easy for some to think that all they need are earplugs, and for minor cases of light snoring, this may do the trick. But some persons find earplugs uncomfortable and that they make it difficult for them to hear the alarm in the morning, a child crying at night, and so on. Again, irritation, frustration, and anger can quickly build between the two.

If you think that your snoring is a personal issue, you may technically be right, but when you’re in a relationship you need to understand how your behavior affects the other person, and if it’s causing such a rift between the two of you, it’s time to have it addressed. After all, there are just too many snoring remedies that are effective for you not to.

No doubt everyone in the world wants to think that they are attractive and socially acceptable. To be told that you have a repulsive habit or are less than appealing because of some physical trait can be devastating. When it comes to snoring, even though this is something that a person isn’t doing deliberately and may have little control over, it can still be a sensitive issue.

It’s true that most everyone has a problem with snoring. It may be hard to think of that sexy celebrity as snorting and choking their way through sleep, but chances are it happens. And snoring is not just a problem for the old either, as it can be caused by a variety of issues that afflict anyone, no matter what their age.

But snoring is a very serious issue as well. Sleep deprivation can cause a myriad of health problems, from chronic headaches, irritability, fatigue, lack of concentration, lack of problem solving skills, and the risk of falling asleep at inappropriate times such as at work or while driving. Snoring is dangerous not just for the person who does it but for the people around him or her that are trying to sleep as well.

So how do you approach someone about their snoring, and still have a good relationship (and all your teeth) afterward? There are some quick things to think about. For one, give the person their privacy. Don’t bring up snoring over the family dinner or when relatives are visiting, even if the subject comes up by chance. This may be a hard subject for them to deal with, so approach it in private. Another thing to remember about snoring is to not make fun of the person either. Trying to imitate the sound or to make jokes about it is probably just going to wind up being hurtful, not helpful.

Also, approach the issue of snoring as the medical condition that it is, not as if this person is now physically repulsive to you. Remind them that you’re concerned about their health, and about yours as well. Let them know that there are many things on the market that can help the condition, and which aren’t embarrassing or difficult to use. Suggest getting a humidifier for the bedroom or trying some eucalyptus oil. Certain teas can help snoring, as can sprays and inhalers. None of these are too embarrassing or difficult to use. Tell them you’ll wear a nose strip to bed if they do!

Remember the old golden rule, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” If your spouse or friend or family member heard your snoring or recognized some other bad habit of yours that needed addressing, you would want them to treat you kindly when talking about it, wouldn’t you? Their snoring should be no different. So be nice about it, be direct but kind, and chances are you’ll both be on your way to a better night’s sleep.

Many people are looking for a solution to snoring, and rightly so. A chronic lack of sleep is not just annoying, it’s dangerous. When you don’t get your full seven or eight hours of rest every single night, you can become irritable and frustrated. Chronic headaches can ensue. Many people report falling asleep when they shouldn’t such as behind the wheel or during slow times at work. Another reason that you need to investigate a solution to snoring is that if your snoring is caused by something as dangerous as sleep apnea, when the brain is not getting oxygen and so you’re making snorting or gasping sounds, you can actually suffer minor brain damage after some time. This damage can cause a lack of attention and concentration and even show up in problem solving abilities.

A Very Unpleasant Solution to Snoring

But the most difficult solution to snoring that many people don’t even want to think about or talk about is this: lose weight. Far too many persons snore because they are overweight and even obese, and sometimes even just losing a mere ten or twenty pounds can be an adequate solution to snoring.

The reason that excessive body weight is such a problem for this issue is that when you have excessive fat in the area of the neck, this can collapse around the throat and cut off the air passages. Most any solution to snoring will tell you that it’s important to keep these passageways clear and open; but all the moisturizers and sprays and drops in the world will not help if those passages are being squeezed shut.

No one likes to be told that they need to lose weight, but sometimes this is the only solution to snoring that will work for a person. You can keep your throat as coated as you want and your nasal passages as clear as you want, but it will do no good if you’re squeezing your throat shut by your own neck.

Working This Out on Your Own

The good news when it comes to weight loss as a solution to snoring is that this means that there’s something you can do about it. Some problems are never going to be cured short of a surgeon’s scalpel, but losing weight is something you can do yourself. When the problem is one that you can tackle on your own, then this should be empowering, not overwhelming.

Exercising is a great way to begin your weight loss journey, and may also work as an added solution to snoring because exercise strengthens the lungs and the respiratory system overall. When your respiratory system is strongest, you’re less likely to be gasping and choking for air during the night, something that many people confuse for snoring.

So losing weight may not be the easiest solution to snoring that one can have, and it may be a difficult issue for a person to face overall. But it can also mean the difference between a good night’s rest or not.

If you snore, even if it’s a chronic habit or problem, before you run off and see your doctor and sign up for the latest surgery, there are 3 easy ways to stop snoring that you should consider trying first. We call them easy because they don’t involve any fancy appliances or devices or cumbersome and torturous facial appliances. They can be done relatively easily and affordably, and have been shown to be successful for virtually everyone that has tried them.

The First – and Easiest – of the Ways to Stop Snoring

Some of the easiest ways to stop snoring are to keep yourself from sleeping on your back. When you sleep on your back, your head usually falls back and your mouth falls open, enabling you to start snoring. We’re not supposed to breathe through our mouths, but this happens when the mouth falls open. The first and easiest of the ways to stop snoring is to keep yourself from sleeping on your back, and solutions for this are usually pretty simple. You can prop up some pillows under your one side so that you can roll over. You can put a tennis ball in the waistband of your pajamas or back of your shirt, adhering it with a bit of Velcro. You can use a snore pillow, which is typically made of foam and shaped in such a way that you cannot roll over very easily.

You really don’t need anything special to keep you from sleeping on your back, making this one of the most affordable ways to stop snoring. A few new or extra pillows, or even some extra bed linens rolled up and put underneath you will do the trick. Some even find that a new throw pillow that you would normally use for the couch does the trick.

The Second of the Easy Ways to Stop Snoring

You need to add moisture and humidity to your environment to keep your throat from becoming dry. Putting a humidifier or vaporizer in your bedroom is also one of the easiest ways to stop snoring. The added moisture keeps your throat hydrated so that even if you do get caught breathing through your mouth, you’re not going to actually be snoring.

The Third of the Easy Ways to Stop Snoring

Keeping your sinus cavities open in order to facilitate breathing through your nose is another of the easy and affordable ways to stop snoring. How to do this? Use some eucalyptus or menthol oil under your nose. Add some to your vaporizer. Rub some on your chest. Try a mentholated cough drop before you go to bed, just making sure to finish it before you go to sleep so that you don’t choke.

See? None of these three easy ways to stop snoring are hard, expensive, or involve weird devices worn over your face or inside your mouth. As a matter of fact, you can try any of them today and get yourself a better night’s sleep tonight.

If the chainsaw noise has been keeping you up at night, chances are that you are just screaming that you want to stop snoring now. Or maybe it’s someone in the bed with you that has the problem. Either way, how can this be done? Do the devices you see advertised really work? Is surgery your only option to get you to stop snoring?

If your doctor has told you that you absolutely must have surgery, then you should definitely listen to him or her. But for many, there are other options to get them to stop snoring, long before it’s necessary to even visit your doctor. And yes, some of those devices you see advertised do seem to work well, for some people that is.

The real key to get you to stop snoring is to understand why it happens in the first place. For many people, they simply sleep in a position that causes their head to fall back and their mouth to fall open. When they breathe through their mouth, their throat gets dry and they begin to make the sound we call snoring. In this case, the best way to stop snoring is to keep the head from falling back. This might mean a so-called snore pillow, which cradles your head and neck and keeps it in proper alignment. You might also consider piling some pillows under one side of you so that you can’t roll over on your back and will be forced to sleep on your side or stomach.

Others cannot stop snoring because their nasal passages are constantly clogged, so no matter what position they’re in, they’re going to start breathing through their mouth when they sleep. If this is you, why are your sinuses clogged? If you have chronic sinus problems, you should probably see a doctor for asthma, allergies, collapsing nasal passages, and so on. You can’t stop snoring if you can’t breathe properly, and you can’t breathe properly if you don’t unclog your nose. It may not be as easy for someone with a medical condition or concern to unclog their nasal passages as it is for others. If you just have a cold or it’s very dry in your home, a bit of eucalyptus or menthol rub might do the trick, or a mentholated cough drop before you go to bed may be sufficient (being sure to finish it completely before you go to sleep so as to reduce a choking hazard). But if it’s allergies or some chronic respiratory problem, this needs to be addressed by a doctor.

For yourself personally, the only way that you’ll be able to stop snoring is if you figure out what’s causing it in the first place. Be honest with yourself about your respiratory health overall. If you can’t breathe during the day, of course you won’t be able to breathe at night. It may be time to see an allergist, or to try some menthol oil on your nose before you go to bed.

If your doctor has recommended any type of snoring surgery to you, then chances are that this is your last and best option to eliminate this problem from your life. Most doctors will recommend any type of surgery only as a last resort or when all other treatment methods have failed, and this includes treatments for snoring as well.

Many forms of snoring surgery are rather quick and painless, and are often done on an outpatient basis, so there really is no need to be afraid or apprehensive. However, if you’re unclear on the various treatment options and need a bit more guidance, we’ll try to outline the major types of snoring surgery here and what they entail. And remember, if you have any other questions or are apprehensive, you definitely should speak up and talk to your doctor about that. He or she should be able to answer your questions clearly and directly and in a manner that you understand before you elect to have any type of procedure.

Purpose of Snoring Surgery

Obviously each patient is different in how or why they need surgery to help eliminate snoring. However, most have certain issues in common, and the most popular types of snoring surgery work to eliminate these particular issues:

They may be designed to remove excessive soft tissue from the throat and the mouth to clear the airway through the throat. This type of snoring surgery may involve the soft palate, which is the back portion of the roof of the mouth, the tonsils, adenoids, uvula, or other areas of tissue around the mouth and throat.

When you sleep, you shouldn’t be breathing through your mouth, but if you have a condition that blocks your sinuses and nasal cavities, this will of course happen naturally. So, another type of snoring surgery is designed to correct an abnormally shaped septum, which is the wall between the nostrils, or to remove nasal polyps that block airflow through the nose.

Another common type of snoring surgery is designed to correct the shape of the bony structures of the airway in the mouth and throat, however, this is one of the more invasive and time consuming types of surgeries. More than one visit may be needed in this instance.

Methods Used

For any type of snoring surgery that is designed to remove tissue, many doctors today are finding that lasers do a much better job at cutting away this tissue than a scalpel. Doctors are able to remove only a few layers of tissue this way, and because the laser cauterizes the wound immediately, there is less bleeding and a shorter recovery time.

For yourself, if you are considering a snoring surgery, speak to your doctor beforehand and make sure you understand everything that will be done and what will be expected of you, such as a soft foods or liquid diet for a few days. Be aware of possible side effects as well, and then you will be better able to make your decision.

Anyone that is experiencing the chronic loss of sleep that is associated with constant snoring may be ready for some hardcore, heavy-duty snoring solutions that only their doctor can prescribe. However, before you run out and start paying for cumbersome mouth devices and breathing machines and putting yourself through surgery, consider that there may actually be some very effective snoring solutions right at your fingertips. By making just a few changes in your bedroom environment, nighttime routine, or by using some products you may already have in your medicine chest, you may be on to some very affordable, safe, and natural snoring solutions.

Making Changes

If you’re settled into your bedtime routine, chances are it will be somewhat difficult to make any changes, no matter how small they are. If you have a nighttime snack and then brush, floss, rinse, have a glass of beer and take one last drag on that cigarette before going to bed, you may not even realize what you’re doing every night as you go through the motions. But part of your snoring solutions may mean making some changes to that routine. For one thing, that nighttime snack might be making it difficult for you to breathe at night if it’s very difficult to digest, or includes meats and dairy products. Most snoring solutions involve keeping the air passages open, but when you eat foods that are hard to digest, your body diverts oxygen to your stomach and intestines. Make your snack something light, such as fruit.

Also, those products that you use for oral hygiene may contain alcohol, and alcohol is very drying to your mouth and throat. Part of your snoring solutions would be to switch to products that contain no alcohol; these are easily advertised in the oral care section of your local pharmacy, so all you need to do is read the labels.

Alcohol and smoking are counterproductive to any snoring solutions you may try, as both dry the mouth, the throat, and all the areas involved in breathing, and this in turn leads to snoring. If you can’t quit either one, don’t indulge for at least two hours before bedtime, and rinse you mouth out well with some of those alcohol free products we’ve just mentioned.

Using Some Additional Products for Snoring Solutions

Anything that opens your nasal passages to allow you to breathe freer is going to be part of your snoring solutions, so check your medicine cabinet or pantry. Do you have any menthol products, such as cough drops or chest rubs? Try these before you go to bed to open up blocked sinuses, coat your throat, and help you breathe clearer and freer.

If you live in a dry climate or it’s the winter months, try simmering a pot of water on the stove and breathing in the humid vapors for a few minutes before bedtime (being careful not to burn yourself of course). All these are simple and natural snoring solutions that are probably right at your fingertips!
